Why We’re Building Johnny

Quantum Yield Partners is building Johnny, a personalized AI system. This is a note on why, written for the investors and partners who ask us the question most often: why this, and why now.

01Software should understand context over time

Most software is stateless in the way that matters. It answers the question in front of it and forgets the person who asked. Each session starts from nothing, so the burden of context sits with the user: restate the situation, re-explain the preferences, re-attach the files. The tools have become remarkably capable at the moment of the request and remarkably poor at everything around it.

We think the next useful step is not a smarter answer to a single prompt. It is software that understands the situation it is being used in, and keeps understanding it as the day goes on. Context is the product.

02Personal AI should persist beyond single prompts

A personal AI that is only present when you open a window is a search box with better manners. Persistence is what changes the category: memory that carries forward, monitoring that continues when you are not looking, recommendations that arrive because the system noticed something, and actions it can take on your behalf when you have asked it to.

Persistence is also where the difficulty is. It needs a durable model of the person, boundaries on what the system may do without asking, and an interface that can be present without being intrusive. Those are engineering problems and design problems in equal measure, and they are the ones we are spending our time on.

03Wearables create a more continuous interface

A phone is picked up. A laptop is opened. A wearable is simply with you. That difference is why we treat wearable computing as the natural surface for a persistent AI: it can see what you see, hear what you hear, and respond in the moment, without the ceremony of reaching for a device.

We are deliberate about the order of operations here. The interface matters, but the intelligence layer is what makes it worth wearing. Wearable integration is the next stage of Johnny’s development, not its starting point.

04Johnny is software-first

Johnny is QYP’s software. The company owns the software layer: the agent systems, the memory and context model, the monitoring and recommendation logic, and the interface states that present them. That is where the durable value sits, and it is the part that transfers across whatever hardware the experience eventually runs on.

QYP does not manufacture hardware today and is not claiming to. Deeper hardware ownership is something we are exploring as a later step, and whether it makes sense will depend on investment and strategy. What we can say plainly is that the software is being built now, and it is being built to integrate with a wearable surface.

05Why QYP is investing in AI infrastructure

A persistent personal AI runs continuously, for each person, on their data. That is a different infrastructure profile from a chat product that answers on demand, and it is why we are raising capital to build dedicated compute capacity rather than renting all of it indefinitely.

Dedicated capacity gives us greater control over deployment and, over time, lower dependence on third-party infrastructure. It also lets us make decisions about privacy and data handling that are hard to make on someone else’s platform. This is a long-term investment in the ability to run Johnny the way it should be run.
